Let total number of swans be x .
Swans playing on shore of tank= 2 7 x
Swans fighting= 2
x = 2 + 2 7 x
7 x = 2 x − 4
Squaring both sides, 4 9 x = 4 x 2 − 1 6 x + 1 6 4 x 2 − 6 5 x + 1 6 = 0
On solving this quadratic equation, we get x = 1 6 , 4 1 . Since number of swans cannot be in fraction, x = 1 6
Note that we got an extra solution x = 4 1 because of squaring which usually ends up with some wrong solutions.
