Out of a group of swans, 7 2 \frac { 7 }{ 2 } of the the square root of the number of swans are playing on the shore of a tank. The 2 remaining ones are playing,with amorous fight, in the water. What is the total no. of swans?

Let total number of swans be x x .

Swans playing on shore of tank= 7 2 x \frac{7}{2}\sqrt{x}

Swans fighting= 2 2

x = 2 + 7 2 x x=2+\frac{7}{2}\sqrt{x}

7 x = 2 x 4 7\sqrt{x}=2x-4

Squaring both sides, 49 x = 4 x 2 16 x + 16 49x=4x^{2}-16x+16 4 x 2 65 x + 16 = 0 4x^{2}-65x+16=0

On solving this quadratic equation, we get x = 16 , 1 4 x=16,\frac{1}{4} . Since number of swans cannot be in fraction, x = 16 x=\boxed{\boxed{16}}

Note that we got an extra solution x = 1 4 x=\frac{1}{4} because of squaring which usually ends up with some wrong solutions.
