Algebra Level 2

If the graph y = a x + 7 x 4 y=\frac{ax+7}{x-4} is symmetric with respect to y = x , y=x, what is the value of a ? a?

Given y=(ax+7)/(x-4)..........................(1)

Since at x=0,we get y=-7/4 i.e.(0,-7/4) is a point on graph and also it is given that graph is symmetric along y=x therefore (-7/4,0) will also lie on graph.

So put y=0 in (1), we get ax+7=0 or x=-7/a

now compare this coordinate(-7/a,0) to (-7/4,0)

gives a=4.
