The word 'intersecting' should actually be ' bisecting '. Let the length of the rectangle be a and it's breadth be b . Then the area of the rectangle is a b , that of the white triangle is 2 1 × 2 b × a = 4 1 a b and of the yellow trapezium is ( 1 − 4 1 ) a b . Hence the required fraction is 4 3 .
