Tension of a ring

Level pending

A ring is set on the x-y plane with radius r

There is a clockwise current i through the ring

And a uniform magnetic field B facing -z axis

Find the tension of the ring

  • r = 1
  • i = 1
  • B = 1
  • all in SI unit

The answer is 1.

we focus on half of the ring

the magnetic force is 2irB

since it is not moving

the net force is 0

therefore 2irB - 2T = 0
(T is the tension, there are two sides connect to the ring so it's 2T instead of T)

T= irB =1

force "F" acting on ring is Birsina
where a is the angle between B and i. force is equal to tension therefore Birsina is tension and angle is 90 degrees therefore tension T is equal to Bir
