The 2 Jugs

Logic Level 1

Assume that you have 2 jugs, with no markings on them. One of them can hold up to m m litres of water, and the other can hold up to m + 1 m + 1 litres of water. Also, you have an infinite supply of water.

One day, I ask you for a certain amount of water, in litres. You may use the 2 jugs for the following actions:

  • Fill it up to the brim

  • Pour in and out water between the 2 jugs

  • Dump the water in it

Is it always possible for you to fulfil my request? You can repeatedly do any of these 3 actions in any way you want.

Bonus: Proof for the answer?

Note: For those people who are using the Imperial System of Measurements, you may address the problem by changing litres into gallons.

It is not always possible It is always possible
