This shape is called Reuleaux triangle .

It's a kind of shape that can give you almost square-like hole drill.

So formula for area of this shape is π 3 2 r 2 \dfrac{\pi-\sqrt3}{2}r^2 where r r is constant width, as mentioned in Wikipedia page.

From given information, we can see that r = 4 r=4 , so just plug it in formula and there you go.

I wanted you you to get it without searching for it

Sorry, but I want you to add more details to your question.

How can we know for sure that golden area is reuleaux triangle? Not enough information is given. All you did was show pictures.

Do that and I will update my solution to a solution without the use of formula and any outside sources.

it's a piece of a circle

Three times the 60 degrees sectors MINUS two times 4 cm sided equilateral triangles.(since has been counted three times in stead of once.)
3 π 60 360 4 2 2 1 2 4 2 3 2 = 8 ( π 3 ) = 11.276. \implies~3*\pi*\dfrac{60}{360}*4^2-2*\dfrac 1 2 *4^2*\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}\\=8(\pi-\sqrt3)=11.276.\\
In Engineering this shape has been used for rotary engines in place of reciprocating engines.
The three empty spaces are sealed from one another.
Gasses in the empty spaces are moved round.

ya you used my same idea
