a man walked 1 km south from his base, and saw a bear. he wanted to kill it for food, but the bear chased him. to escape, he ran 1 km east, and saw that the bear has gone away. he then went 1 km north, and was back at his camp.

what color was the bear?

The spherical geometry yields that when a point moves starting from one pole of the earth along a Meridean through some distance, and then along the parallel of latitude through his position, then it is at the same distance from that pole as it was in it's position initially on that parallel. Hence the bear must be a polar bear, and it's color must be white

Ha! Nice riddle!

This question relies on the way we move on the poles, and as the poles contain only white bears, then white bears it is!
