4 x = 1 2 ( 2 ) 2 x = 2 1 2 2 x = 2 1 { 4 }^{ x }=\frac { 1 }{ 2 } \\ \Rightarrow { (2) }^{ { 2 }^{ x } }={ 2 }^{ -1 }\\ \Rightarrow { 2 }^{ 2x }={ 2 }^{ -1 }

Since the bases are equal, thus the exponents can be equated, 2 x = 1 x = 1 2 2x=-1\\ \Rightarrow x=\frac { -1 }{ 2 }

a b = 1 2 \frac { a }{ b } = \frac{-1}{2} , then a + b = 1 + 2 = 3 a+b=-1+2=3
