The fish

Logic Level 2

In one night a theif stold a rare fish. The police arrived in a street with five identical houses. In one of the houses the theif is hiding. The police calls the detective. He has to choose the house where the thief is hiding. He can't choose random because the thief will notice and run away with the fish. The information he got is: the owners of the houses have different nationalities, different pets , diffrent walls (color) . They drink different drinks and smoke diffrent cigarettes. The information that the police gives is: 1. The brit has red walls 2. The swede has a dog. 3.The house with green walls is directly to the left of the house with white walls. 4. The Dane drinks tea. 5. The owner of the house with green walls drinks coffe. 6. The person who smokes Pall Mall cigarettes owns a bird 7.The owner of the house with yellow walls smokes Dunhill cigarettes. 8.The man who lives in the center house drinks milk. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10.The man who smokes blends lives next to the cat owner. 11.The horse's owner lives next to the man who smokes dunhill. 12. The man who smokes Blue Master drinks Root Beer. 13. The German smokes Prince. 14. The Norwegian lives next to the house with blue walls. 15. The man who smokes Blends has a next -door neighbor who drinks water.

Inferences, in chronological order:

1) Norwegian lives in first house. His house must be yellow, since the blue house is 2nd, the green and white houses are neighbors, and the Brit lives in the red house. Since he lives in the yellow house, he smokes Dunhills.

2) The green house must be #3 or #4, with the white house next to it at #4, #5 respectively. The owner of the green house drinks coffee. But the man living in the center house drinks milk. So the green house must be #4, the white house #5, and the red house #3. And the Brit lives in the red house.

3) The horse owner lives next to the yellow house, since that is where the Dunhill smoker lives. Thus the horse is in #2.

4) what does the Norwegian drink? Not milk (#3) or coffee (green house) and not root beer (drunk by Blue Master smoker). And not tea, since he's not Danish. Thus the Norwegian drinks water.

5) His neighbor in #2 smokes blends. That means he cannot drink root beer, so he drinks tea (and is Danish), and the person in #5 drinks root beer and smokes Blue Master.

6) The German smokes Prince, and thus does not live in 2 or 5, and must live in #4. That puts the Swede in #5, with his dog.

7) the only cigarette left is Pall Mall, which the Brit must smoke in #3. Thus he owns a bird.

8) The man who smokes blends (the Dane) is next-door to the cat owner, who is not the Brit, and must be the Norwegian.

9) The only place left for the fish is the German's house, #4.

Total array:

1 - Norwegian - yellow walls - drinks water - smokes Dunhill - owns cat

2 - Dane - blue walls - drinks tea - smokes blends - owns horse

3 - Brit - red walls - drinks milk - smokes Pall Malls - owns bird

4 - German - green walls - drinks coffee - smokes Prince - owns fish

5 - Swede - white walls - drinks root beer - smokes Blue Master - owns dog

The text doesn't do this justice - following the logic requires one to keep track of all the possibilities and thus see what has already been deduced and what possibilities are eliminated.

Guys, this is Einstein's riddle but with a thief included so if you have seen the answer to or attempted or solved Einstein's riddle, it's pretty easy to work out it's the German as Einstein's riddle answer was the German. So, as soon as I read the text, I remembered Einstein's riddle and answered the German and I got it correct - I suggest you change the wording so I can't figure it out that easily!
