After getting 50 50 % increase in the initial salary of x x , the employee's salary becomes 1.5 x 1.5x . After getting 200 200 % increase to this salary, the employee's salary becomes y = 4.5 x y = 4.5x , which is 450 450 % of x x .

I think the problem is quite confusing. When he increase the salary(x) by 50% then the new salary would be 1.5x. Then if he would increase the salary again by 200%, then you would get twice of 1.5x which is 3x which is equal to y. Thus y is thrice x or simply 300% of x.

Increase by 200% does not mean it will get doubled. It means double of the initial amount will be added to the initial amount. So, increase by 200% results in amount becoming thrice.

Salary after increment of 50% on initial salary:
y = x + x × 50 100 y = x + x \times \frac {50}{100}
y = 1.5 x y = 1.5x

Salary after increment of 200% on new salary:
y = 1.5 x + 1.5 x × 200 100 y = 1.5x + 1.5x \times \frac{200}{100}
y = 4.5 x y = 4.5x

y is 450% of x.

I'm not saying that the answer is totally wrong, but due to its syntax I think It's not impossible for some to get confused :)
