The Heron Lake

Geometry Level 2

A bird watcher builds a small triangular lake near his hut to attract the nearby herons. The lake has sides 10 \sqrt{10} meters, 20 \sqrt{20} meters and c \sqrt{c} meters , and the lake has a surface area of 7 7 meters squared. Find the larger value of c.

The answer is 34.

Instead, use the sine area formula, which gives sin θ = 7 2 10 \sin \theta = \frac{7 \sqrt{2}}{10} , which we can plug into the LoC to get, c = 34 or 26. The larger value is 34.

You use heron's formula, which says that the area of a triangle of sides a a , b b and c c is given by s ( s a ) ( s b ) ( s c ) \sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)} where s s denotes the semiperimeter and is given by s = a + b + c 2 s=\frac{a+b+c}{2}

Can you possibly explain more step by step?
