The intensity of an earthquake

Algebra Level 3

An earthquake is usually measured by the magnitude, M, on the Richter scale. The intensity, I, of an earthquake and the magnitude, M, are both related by the formula: M = log(I/Io); wherein Io is the intensity of an arbitrary chosen earthquake. The earthquake that hit Paris, France, measured 5.7 on the Richter scale while the earthquake that hit Berlin, Germany, measured 7.8.

To the nearest integer, how many times stronger is the earthquake that hit Berlin?

Just answer this problem on the nearest whole number....

The answer is 126.

7.8=log(x), 5.7=log(y) therefore 10^7.8=x, 10^5.7=y, x/y=10^7.8/10^5.7=125.89, 126 (to the nearest whole number)
