The International Theft

Level pending

A Japanese ship was en route to the open sea. The Japanese captain went for a shower removing his diamond ring and Rolex watch on the table. When he returned, his valuables were missing.

The Captain immediately called five suspected crew members and asked each one where and what he was doing for the last 15 minutes.

The Filipino cook (in a heavy overcoat): I was in fridge room getting meat for cooking.

The Indian Engineer (with a torch in hand): I was working on generator engine.

The Sri Lankan seaman: I was at the mast correcting the flag which was upside down by mistake.

The British Radio officer: I was messaging to company that we are reaching the next port in 72 hours from now, that is Wednesday morning at 1000hrs.

The British navigation officer: I am on night watch, so I was sleeping in my cabin.

The captain caught the liar.

So, who is the thief?

Because there is a picture of flags in the question, so it must be a hint. Anybody who mentioned something about them must be the answer.

The ship was Japanese and thus the flag on the ship has to be the Japanese flag. Now the Japanese flag is designed in such a way that it is symmetric about a horizontal axis and thus rotating the flag about it would cause no noticeable change. Thus, when the Sri Lankan seaman says that the flag on the mast was upside down, then he was clearly lying. Hence he is the one with no solid alibi and therefore the most probable thief.

If we hang the Japanese flag upside down, it remains the same, no change. So, the Sri Lankan Seaman is lying.
