How do we know what is which? There's at least three false statements if we knew only one of them caused the murder.
Harry says "William caused the murder".
Albert says "William didn't cause the murder".
Mary says "Oliver caused the murder".
William says "James caused the murder".
Oliver says "I didn't cause the murder".
James says "Mary caused the murder".
Contradictory partnerships :
Harry & Albert (William)
Mary & Oliver (Oliver)
William accused James who accused Mary.
H --> W --> J --> M --> O
A defended W while O defended himself.
Harry & Albert from the first partnership are not accused by anyone, so if the murderer turned out to be either one of them, then there'd be only 2 truths spoken by A and O who were being defensive.
Let's try listing how many true statement(s) are there by supposing the suspects as the murderer one by one. The next part would be the truth values of their statements in this order { H, A, M, W, O, J } and the last part is the total truths in that particular case.
H or A : FTFFTF = 2
W : TFFFTF = 2
J : FTFTTF = 3
M : FTFFTT = 3
O : FTTFFF = 2
Still no obvious reasons for James to be the murderer since he shares the same number of total truth with Mary, unless it was stated that a murderer is strictly male as opposed to a murderess.
Well, as of now, James will be our murderer until an edit is added in.
