I have picked 8 8 of the numbers from 1 1 through 9 9 and hidden them in circles in the diagram below. Each circle has a line passing throught it; the tally line A B AB gives sums of the numbers on each line. Which number l didn't pick?

Numbers on the sum line add up to 40.

Numbers from 1 to 9 add up to 45.

45 − 40 = 5 45-40=5

Number 5 \boxed5 did not get picked.
