the riddle of the mystery

there was a detective who was really infamous and wanted to become famous

so the detective made a fake mystery for himself in a abandoned theatre he made fake props blood and while he was doing this he did not realize a gang of thugs sneaking behind him. They captured him and took him into a hideout in the same theatre. the boss gave the detective two pills and a glass of water. he told the detective to choose a pill and swallow that and the boss will do the other. but the detective eats a random pill and dies but the boss didn't force the detective to choose any precise pill and the boss survived how.
