The Scientists Dilemma!

Chemistry Level 1

There are two Scientists whose proposed their respective periodic tables based on Aufbau Principle

  • Scientist 1 proposed his periodic table by following Aufbau principle.

  • Scientist 2 proposed his periodic table by not following Aufbau principle.

True or False ?

Potassium ( K 19 ) \text{Potassium} (K - 19) is placed in s b l o c k s-block of Scientist 1 periodic table whereas it is placed in d b l o c k d-block in Scientist 2 periodic table.

  • When one is not following Aufbau principle the electrons get filled in the order : 1 s , 2 s , 2 p , 3 s , 3 p , 3 d , 4 s , 4 p , 4 d , 4 f , e t c 1s,2s,2p, 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, 4p, 4d, 4f, etc
False True Can't be determined

When we follow Aufbau principle the elctronic configuration of K 19 K - 19 will be : 1 s 2 , 2 s 2 , 2 p 6 , 3 s 2 , 3 p 6 , 4 s 1 1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^2, 3p^6, \boxed{\color{#3D99F6}4s^1} Here, the differentiating electron (or the last electron) is entering into s o r b i t a l \color{#3D99F6}s-orbital so potassium will be placed in s b l o c k \color{#3D99F6}s-block of the periodic table.

When we do not follow Aufbau principle the elctronic configuration of K 19 K - 19 will be : 1 s 2 , 2 s 2 , 2 p 6 , 3 s 2 , 3 p 6 , 3 d 1 1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^2, 3p^6, \boxed{\color{#20A900}3d^1} Here, the differentiating electron (or the last electron) is entering into d o r b i t a l \color{#20A900}d-orbital so potassium will be placed in d b l o c k \color{#20A900}d-block of the periodic table.

Hence, both the scientists proposals are correct.

Slight grammar error: When we not follow Aufbau Principle (This is wrong) Correct: When we do not follow Aufbau principle

Oh that's a mistake I didn't check it. Thanks for informing.

But in the d block, doesn't the electron enter the (n-1) subshell, and not the nth subshell?
