simply:

x + y = 3 x+y=3

( x + y ) 2 = 9 = x 2 + y 2 + 2 x y (x+y)^{2}=9=x^{2}+y^{2}+2xy

9 = x 2 + y 2 + 2 ( 4 ) 9=x^{2}+y^{2}+2(-4)

x 2 + y 2 = 9 + 8 = 17 x^{2}+y^{2}=9+8=17
