The Tasty Tortilla

Geometry Level 3

You start out with a whole, circular tortilla as pictured above. Your job is to divide the tortilla into eight equal pieces, using only cuts made in a straight line.

What is the minimum number of cuts you need to make?

Remember, it is a tortilla, you may roll it, fold it, (and eventfully) eat it! Just make 8 equal pieces with the minimum number of cuts ...

Fold tortilla in half, fold it in half again along the radius making a 90-degree arc, and then fold it in half along the radius again making a 45-degree arc. Now you cut down the middle and get eight equal pieces.

It's tricky. I wonder if you should state the the tortilla can be manipulated.

It's really tricky, but right,,,

Dear Calvin, can you please look into this? Why does it show up as 0 posts on my page when i have posted several problems? It doesn't matter to be honest but i was just curious why...

Does this have anything to do with 2^3 = 8?

William Shao - 6 years, 11 months ago

You fold it one more time.

good solution

yes agree with calvin

The tortilla is tasty no more.

Nishant Prabhu - 6 years, 11 months ago

This is wrong. You must fold it one more time to make 16 pieces and then cut it once to get your eight. Only folding this three times gives you four pieces with one cut.

"Remember, it is a tortilla, you may roll it, fold it, " tells you that the tortilla can be manipulated

Quite tricky!

Because you didn't modify it in a timely manner, I got some free geometry rating :) Thanks, but be sure to be clear next time.

It's confused

It should be stated that the tortilla can be manipulated....otherwise its very tricky.

The answer is 1:

The key is realizing that you are allowed to fold the tortilla. By folding it in half once to form a 180-degree arc, you can see that if you were to cut it down the middle, you will get two equal pieces. No fold it in half again to form a 90-degree arc, and you can see that if you were to cut this down the middle, you would get 4 equal pieces. Following this pattern, fold the tortilla once more to form a 45-degree arc, and cut it down the middle to get 8 equal pieces.

Useless question ,whether you are going to divide in 8, 16 or 32 , minimum cut always be the same. Major factor is no of turns.

This way are we really getting 8 equal parts??
