The Third One

Logic Level 2

There has been a bank robbery in Southampton, and the detective identified that there were three major criminals.

The cops have caught 2 criminals and they won't reveal the third criminal .

So the police questions 3 suspects: Mr Johnson, Mr Harris and Mr Peter.

Each suspect makes a statement after they have been asked the question "Who is the robber ?"

Mr Johnson : I don't know him/her, but I guess it is Mr Luke.

Mr Harris : I was not here at that time, I was in an another city.

Mr Peter : I don't know them. It might be Mr Luke

Who is the third robber ?

HINT The third criminal is one of the three suspects !

Mr Peter Mr Harris Mr Luke Mr Johnson

1 solution

It is Mr Peter because he said "I don't know them "

How does he know there are 2 criminals rather than 1 ???

Using "them" as a singular pronoun when the gender is unknown is fairly common.

There is such a thing as singular them. People use it when the quantity was well known but not the quality (only one person but the gender unknown / can't be identified). I used singular them to be gender neutral.

Mr Johnson also said that

Fahim Muhtamim - 1 year, 7 months ago

He said he because the police asked " Who is the robber ?"

Prakash Kallanmarthodi - 1 year, 7 months ago

If he said that he didn't know them, then why he said that it may be?

Did you get the question right ?
