If the only only clue was that the product of the ages was 36, the ages could be:

  • 1 1 36
  • 1 2 18
  • 1 3 12
  • 1 4 9
  • 1 6 6
  • 2 2 9
  • 2 3 6
  • 3 3 4

The question states that the sum of their ages is 13. The only triplet of numbers there that add to 13 are 1,6,6 and 2,2,9. The answer can't be 1,6,6 as then there wouldn't be an older sister, therefore the answer must be 2,2,9, making the oldest sister 9.

2 * 2 * 3 * 3 = 36
Possibilities are......2 * 3 * 6 or 4 * 3 * 3 & 9 * 2 *2
only 9 + 2 +2 = 13

What about 1 * 6 * 6. The two eldest sisters may have an age difference of 0 in years but perhaps some number in months. For example as of today, one sister is born in June 2011 and the eldest in May 2011. How can you be sure?
