At 48 minutes past the hour, the minute hand is 48/60th of the way through an hour, i.e. 288 degrees from the starting point at the top of the circle.
At 48 minutes past 6 p.m., the hour hand is 48/60th = 4/5th of the way between the '6' and the '7' on the clock face. The '6' is 180 degrees from the start, while the '7' is 210 degrees from the start. Thus the hour hand is at 204 degrees from the start.
And there are 288-204 = 84 degrees between the two hands.
