The Top of The Tree

Algebra Level pending

John is climbing a tree. He climbs at a rate of 5.2 ft per minute. However, every time he climbs for 5 minutes, he takes a 1 minute rest.

How tall is the tree if he takes 1.5 hours to get to the top?

Every six minutes, John climbs ( 5.2 ) ( 5 ) + ( 0 ) ( 1 ) = 26 (5.2)(5) + (0)(1) = 26 feet. There are 90 min 6 min = 15 \frac{90 \min}{6 \min} = 15 climbing intervals during this exercise, which means he climbs a total of ( 26 ) ( 15 ) = 390 (26)(15) = \boxed{390} feet.
