The ant must walk on the surface of the block; it cannot go through the wood, around the block on the ground, or fly.

( 2 + 4 ) 2 + 8 2 = 10 \sqrt{(2+4)^{2}+8^2}=\boxed{10} ,the other two ways are longer.
