The Ultimate Crossing Puzzle

Logic Level 3

The S.S. Brilliant is sinking in the North Atlantic sea, after crashing into an iceberg. You, being the logical genius (and the captain) are tasked with getting the remaining passengers to safety, on a nearby island. However, there is only one raft that can transport the remaining passengers. You are in a control tower on the island and must guide the passengers to safety by instructing them. However, the passengers are very superstitious, and have a strange set of rule that you must comply with:

  • There are 2 sons, 2 daughters, a mother, a father, a fugitive and a policeman.
  • No more than 2 people may be on the raft at once.
  • Only the responsible adults (the mother, father and the policeman) may operate the raft.
  • The father cannot be left with any of the daughters without the mother being around.
  • The mother cannot be left with any of the sons without the father being around.
  • The fugitive cannot stay alone with anyone without the policeman.

Time is running out. What is the fewest number of passes required to transport all passengers to safety, without leaving anyone behind or breaking any of the rules? (For clarity, someone going from the boat to the island and back is two passes; someone going to the island from the boat is only one pass.)

Assumptions:

  • These rules do not apply while on the raft (i.e. you can have a daughter and father on the raft, but they cannot be left together on the island).
  • Any person can be left completely alone on either the boat or the island.
  • The time taken to ferry the passengers is negligible.

The answer is 17.

First things first, it is good to notice that there is no way to have an even numbered answer to this question. This is because the raft always has to end on the island, which will always be a result of an odd number of passes.

This problem can be solved (quickest) in 17 passes:

  • Cop & Thief go across
  • Cop comes back
  • Cop & one Daughter go across
  • Cop & Thief comes back
  • Mom & one Daughter go across
  • Mom comes back

Now, both daughters are on the island, and everyone else is on the boat.

  • Mom & Dad go across
  • Dad comes back
  • Cop & Thief go across
  • Mom comes back (The mother doesn't have to stay with the children, only that the father can't be alone with any of them)
  • Mom & Dad go across
  • Dad comes back
  • Dad & one Son go across
  • Cop & Thief go back (Neither of the parents can leave because the other would be alone with the wrong children, so the policeman and fugitive must go across)
  • Cop & one Son go across
  • Cop comes back
  • Cop & Thief go across.
