The XYZ Affair

Algebra Level 2

X, Y and Z are corrupt businessmen who launder money for the Mafia. They were caught and sentenced to prison.

X turned informer and got a mere 12 months. Y got twice that plus 4 months. Z was the kingpin and got a whopping 60 months.

It costs $500,000 per month received to bribe a judge to release a prisoner, and $3,000,000 to have a hit arranged in prison. If X is hit and Y and Z are released via bribes, how much will the Mafia have to fork over in millions of dollars?

In millions of dollars: X gets hit. That's 3.

Y was sentenced to (12 *2) + 4 = 28 months, and Z to 60 months. That's a total of 88 months that needs to be bribed away. Each month costs 0.5 millions, so (88 * 0.5) = 44 million in bribe money is needed.

So the grand total = 3 + 44 = 47 million.
