Let a . b a.b denote a decimal number, where the integers a a and b b represent the integer and fractional parts, respectively.

Find the solution ( x , y ) (x, y) to the equation x y = y . x \frac{x}{y} = y.x and give your answer as x + y . x+y.

x / y = y . x = y + 0.1 x x/y = y.x = y+0.1x

x = y 2 + 0.1 x y x = y^{2}+0.1xy

x x must be a single digit number and not 0 to only be a single decimal. y y must also be a single digit number. x x is a whole number as is y 2 y^{2} so 0.1 x y 0.1xy must also be a whole number and this requires x y xy to be a multiple of 10. Therefore, one of these must be 5 and the other an even number.Therefore y y is at least 1. For the fraction to equal a decimal with integer part 2 or more and to include 5, 5 cannot be the denominator as the biggest value would be 9/y=1.8, so 5 must be on the top and 2 on the bottom, 5/2=2.5

5 2 = 2.5 \frac{5}{2} = 2.5
