Identify the correct statement :

Statement 1 : ( 1 ) 3 2 = ι \large (-1)^{\frac{3}{2}} = \iota

Statement 2 : ( 1 ) 3 2 = ι \large (-1)^{\frac{3}{2}} = -\iota

Details:

  • ι = 1 \iota = \sqrt{-1}

Statement 1 : ( 1 ) 3 2 = { ( 1 ) 3 } 1 2 = ( 1 ) 1 2 = ι \Rightarrow \large (-1)^{\frac{3}{2}} =\{(-1)^3\}^{\frac{1}{2}} = (-1)^{\frac{1}{2}} = \iota

Statement 2 : ( 1 ) 3 2 = { ( 1 ) 1 2 } 3 = ι 3 = ι \Rightarrow\large (-1)^{\frac{3}{2}} = \{(-1)^{\frac{1}{2}}\}^3 = \iota^3 = -\iota

( 1 ) 3 2 = ± ι \therefore \large (-1)^{\frac{3}{2}} = \pm\iota
