What I have learnt is that it is s p 3 d 3 with one lone pair, so technically it should be distorted octahedran, but the lone pair in this compound is present in stereochemically inactive s orbital . In simple language, the s - orbital does not take part in hybridisation or you can say that hybridiation of s orbital is ineffective. So lone pair goes into the s-orbital and its effect is uniformly ditributed over the whole compound, producing the result we have!
