The solution to this question is:

This means that if you add any multiple of 72, they will add up to either 9 or 18.

So therefore X+2+3+4+Y= either 9 or 18, as X234Y is a multiple of 72

But already 2+3+4=9, this means that X+2+3+4+Y=18

Then X+Y=18-9

     X+Y=9

Then if you substitute X=5, then Y= 4, 52344 is divisible by 72.

Therefor X=5

Thank you for solving this question and have a nice day

I did the same way..Firstly I tried taking x = 3 & y = 6.. As the number made by this value was not a multiple of 72 I tried next pair.. And another thing to note is that x will always be odd number..Because y must be even to make the number a multiple of 72. So there were 4 possible cases :- (X,Y) = (3,6) , (5,4) , (7,2) & (1,8) Doing trial and error will give the answer..
