But What Are Their Exact Measurements?

Geometry Level 2

About how big is the height of a car times the length of a bicycle?

The width of a bus The height of a man The length of a bus The thickness of a playing card Cannot be determined

The resulting product has dimension length 2 \text{length}^2 . All the other options have dimension length \text{length} .

On the other hand, it is surely determined; I think it's about the area of the front of a minibus.

Since both of them are varying quantities, they can have different values as well, leading to each of the option being correct at least once for sure.

There is a temptation to reason as follows: a car is about 5 feet tall and a bike is about 6 feet long; 5 times 6 is 30; and 30 feet is about the length of a bus in feet. But we might just as well have reasoned as follows: a car is about 1.5 meters tall and a bike is about 2 meters long; 1.5 times 2 is 3; and 3 meters is about the width of a bus. If you do it in inches you get 4,320 inches, which is longer than a football field.

Our problem would have had an answer if more information were provided, perhaps like this: "If L is the product of the height of a car and the length of a bike, both in feet, about how long is L feet?" But as it is, with no unit of measurement specified, no answer can be determined.

See also Ivan Koswara's important remark below (thanks, Ivan!). If we ask how much area is in a rectangle bounded by sides with lengths about equal to the height of a car and the length of a bike, that question has an answer: about 30 square feet, which is about 3 square meters or 4320 square inches---an area that, as Ivan points out, is "about the area of the front of a minibus".

The truth is that this question has been made just to confuse us.These measurements can differ from each other.Usually we don't feel like selecting the options like ''CANNOT BE DETERMINED'' which forces us to select something else
