Three circles tangent to each other.

Geometry Level 2

Three circles of equal radii are tangent to each other as shown in the above figure. The radius of each circle is 5 5 . What is the area of the blue region?

10 ( 2 π 2 ) 10(\sqrt{2}-\frac{\pi}{2}) 25 ( 3 π 4 ) 25(\sqrt{3}-\frac{\pi}{4}) 25 ( 3 π 2 ) 25(\sqrt{3}-\frac{\pi}{2}) 10 ( 3 π 2 ) 10(\sqrt{3}-\frac{\pi}{2}) 100 ( 3 π 2 ) 100(\sqrt{3}-\frac{\pi}{2})

The area of the blue region is the area of the equilateral triangle minus the three sectors of angle 6 0 60 ^\circ = 100 3 4 25 π 2 = 25 ( 3 π 2 ) . \large\frac{100\sqrt{3}}{4}- \frac{25\pi}{2} = 25(\sqrt{3}-\frac{\pi}{2}).
