A boy is throwing balls into the air, throwing one whenever the previous one is at its highest point. How high (in meters) do the balls rise if he throws twice a second?

It takes each ball 1 2 \frac{1}{2} seconds to reach its highest point. The maximum height is thus 1 2 g t 2 = 1 2 × 9.8 × ( 1 2 ) 2 = 1.23 \frac{1}{2}gt^2=\frac{1}{2}\times9.8\times(\frac{1}{2})^2=\boxed{1.23} meters.
