Time and Time

Algebra Level 1

Last night, the power tripped and my electronic clock reset stopped. I am trying to reset it.

Ajit says that it is 2 x 2x minutes to 4 o'clock, and Vijay says that it is 3 x 3x minutes past 3 o'clock. If both are correct, what is the time now?

3 hours and 36 minutes 3 hours and 24 minutes 4 hours and 24 minutes 3 hours and 12 minutes

we know that the time in hour must be 3 and that the minutes is 3x.

and we also know that 2x is required for time to be exactly 4 .

so the equation formed will be 3x +2x = 60

solving we get x = 12 so 3x = 36 therefore time =--3 hours---36 minutes

Nice solution!!! good job!!!

You use algebra. Since 3x + 2x = 60, 5x = 60. If you divide two equal quantities by the same thing, they're going to stay equal. So, dividing both sides by 5, you get 5x/5 = 60/5. If you multiply x by 5 then divide it by 5, they cancel, so you're just left with x = 60/5, which you calculate to be 12. Since x= 12 and Vijay says it's 3x minutes past 3:00, he's actually saying it's 3 X 12 minutes past 3:00, or 36 minutes past 3.

(4 X 60)-2x= (3 X 60)+3x 240-2x= 180+3x 240-180=2x+3x 60=5x 12=x

4hrs-24mts=3hrs+36mts

nice problem

Taking time as y The two equations will be 240-2x=y 180+3x=y From these two equations we get 5x=60 x=12 Therefore, the time is 240- 12(2)=216in Hencw the time is 3 hours 36 mins

2x+3x=60 mins. 5x=60 mins 5x/5=60 min/5 x=12

let x=12 therefore 2x+3x=60 2(12)=24 3(12)=36

Vijay says that it is 3x or 3(12)=36 minutes past 3'o clock.

3 hrs. + 36 mins. = 3 hrs and 36 mins.

2 a to 4'o clock and 3 a past 3'o clock if a=12 then 2*a=2 * 12=24 and 3 * a =3 * 12=36 thus 24 min to 4'o clock and 36 min past 3 are same time
