M = your present age

S = your sisters present age

Your age 10 years from now is 40, so

M + 10 = 40 M+10=40 \implies M = 30 M=30

So your sisters age is 30 2 = 15 \dfrac{30}{2}=15 .

And her age 12 years ago was 15 12 = 3 15-12=\boxed{3}
