In a particular inter school badminton tournament, 40 students had participated. Each student is eliminated as soon as one loses a match. what is the number of matches played?

note:each match is played between 2 players only

In one match, one player is eliminated. To get one winner, 39 students should be eliminated. So, to eliminate 39 students, 39 matches are required.

Hence, minimum number of matches required = 39

After played 20 matches, there will be 20 students, then 10 and thus after 35 matches, there will be five.

Among the 5 players, there will be 2 matches and 2 will eliminate.

Among the 3 players, there will be 1 match and 1 will eliminate and 2 will remain. And then in the next match, one will be winner. Total 39 matches.

At first the 40 students will devieded at 20 matches then 20 students in 10 matches then 10 students in 5 matches after these 35 matches 5 students will be remained so 4 students will play in 2 matches and 1 student will stay after the 2 matches yhe winners will play together in a match and after this the winner will play with the one who stayed if we calculated (20+10+5+2+1+1) it will be 39 matches

Total number of students is 40. And there will be only one winner left after each play according to the question. So it is required to knock out 39 students per match. So there should be 39 matches to be played.

its very simple because only two player can play a match and 40 players is available so 39 matches has to be played.

Each time half of the players will be eliminated.Because in 2 player match only one can win because this ain't a football match son ;-) 40 players=20 matches(20 wins) 20 players=10 matches(10 wins) 10 players=05 matches(5 wins) Among 5 members 4 should get eliminated to bring one winner.so 4 matches should be played. Therefore totally(20+10+5+4)=39 matches should be played to get a winner for the tournament ;-)
