Make a tower of cubes by placing a base cube of 8 inches side length, placing a 4-inch-length cube on the center of the top face, a 2-inch-length cube on the center of the top of that, and top it with a 1-inch cube. What is the total volume of the tower in cubic inches?

Volume = total volume of the cubes used = 512 + 64 + 8 + 1 = 585 cubic inches
