Trapped In Bellatrix's Lair

Geometry Level 1

In her underground lair, Bellatrix has captured three heroes and chained them to the floor. The length of the rectangular pool is 50 50 m and the width of the pool is 30 30 m.

As she waves her wand and adds 5000 m 3 5000 \text{ m}^3 of water to the pool, Bellatrix hears a loud noise and runs to the next room. How many of the heroes are completely underwater?

  • Hermione is 1.65 meters tall
  • Harry is 1.68 meters tall
  • Ron is 1.75 meters tall

Knowing the formula for volume of a rectangular prism:

V = l × w × h V=l\times w\times h

We can arrange to solve for height and plug in numbers:

V l × w = h \frac{V}{l\times w}=h

2000 50 × 30 = h \frac{2000}{50\times 30}=h

2000 1500 = h \frac{2000}{1500}=h

1.3333... = h \boxed{1.3333...=h}

Comparing this height with the height of our heroes', we find that all heroes are not submerged in water.

Bellatrix was such a noob.

volume equals (width)x(length)x(height). The width is 30 and the length is 50 and we can represent the height with the variable H. (30)x(50)x(H)=2000. 150H=2000. H=(4/3). H=1.333... meters. none of the heroes are shorter than that so none of them are submerged.

the area of rectangular pool is 50 * 30=1500msquares but the volume will be length * breadth * height

so 2000m cube is less than 1500 * 1.65 m (the height of hermoine who is the shortest) so non is completely underwater

Volume, v= l * b * h where l= Length of pool, b= breadth of Pool, h = height of water level Volume of water added v= 2000

h= v/(l*b) = 2000/(50 * 30) = 1.33

Since all the three heroes have height greater than 1.33; no one is completely under water.

2000 cubic meters divided by (30 meters* 50 meters)=1.333333 meters. since their height is greater than this length then no one is underwater.

Divide the vol.=2000 by the length and breadth. you get the height=1.33m. Neither of the three heroes are so short, therefore no one is totally submerged.

All that you needed to know how to do was know how to calculate volume. 50x30=1,500. Then to figure out if the height if the super hero is big enough to avoid getting drowned, simply multiply 1,500 by the super hero's height. If that number is less than the amount of water, which was 2000 m*3, the super hero has not been drowned.

volume of water in tank= 2000 cubic metre volume of tank if height is y= 50X 30 X y Now, the volume of the water should be equal to the volume of tank. So, 2000/ 50X30 gives the value of y as 4/3 or 1.33 metre. So none of the heroes can be compltely submerged.

Volume = a r e a × h e i g h t area \times height

Area = 50 × 30 50 \times 30 = 1500

For any object to be completely underworld, it has to have a height of 2000 1500 \frac{2000}{1500} = 1.333 or below. Since everybody is taller than 1.333m, then nobody will be completely underwater.

the area of the pool is 50m x 30m = 1500 m^{2}

volume is equal to (length x width) x height or simply area x height. so

 1500 m^{2} x *height* = 2000 m^{3}

 *height* = 2000 m^{3} / 1500 m^{2}

 *height* = 1.333 m

since:

 Hermione is 1.65 m > 1.333 m

 Harry is 1.68 m > 1.333 m

 Ron is 1.75 m > 1.333 m

thus no one is drowned...

The rectangular pool has a length of 50 meters and a width of 30 meters. Therefore, the area of the pool is 50 × 30 = 1500 m 2 50 \times 30 = 1500 m^2 .

Then, Bellatrix adds a volume of 2000 m 3 2000 m^3 of water to the pool

Using these, we can solve for the height where the water rose by dividing the volume of the water by the area of the pool.

2000 m 3 1500 m 2 = 1. 3 m \frac{2000 m^3}{1500 m^2} = 1.\overline{3} m

Since the height which the water rose ( 1. 3 m 1.\overline{3} m ) is lower than the height of Hermione, the shortest among the three ( 1.65 m 1.65 m ), we can safely conclude that none of the heroes is completely underwater.

Length of pool (L) = 50 m

Breadth of pool (B) = 30 m

Volume of water in the pool = 200 cubic metres

Therefore, L x B x Height of water in the pool = 2000

50 x 30 x H = 2000

H = 2000 / 1500 = 4/3 = 1.3

Now, the height all three heroes is more than that of the water. Therefore, none of them is completely underwater.

Let the height of water level after water is added be h h . Let the length and width of the pool be l , b l,b respectively.

Now, It is said that 2000 2000 m 3 m^{3} of water is added to the pool, so Volume of pool = 2000 =2000 m 3 m^{3} .

Also, volume of pool = l b h =lbh with l = 50 l=50 m , b = 30 ,b=30 m. So, we have---

l b h = 2000 50 × 30 × h = 2000 h = 2000 50 × 30 h = 4 3 = 1.33 lbh=2000\implies 50\times 30\times h=2000\implies h=\frac{2000}{50\times 30} \implies h=\frac{4}{3}=1.33 m.

So, the water level is at a height of 1.33 1.33 m from the floor but all the heroes have their height > 1.33 >1.33 m , so none of the heroes are completely underwater. So, the required answer is = 0 =\boxed{0}

v=w l h 2000=30 50 h so h = 2000/(30*50) = 4/3 / 1.25 as the shortest hero is Hermione which is 1.65 meters tall so no one will be completely underwater.

50 x 30 x Height of water = Volume of water

As volume of water = 2000

so 50 x 30 x Height of water = 2000

Height of water = 2000 / (50 x 30) = 1.33 meters (which is less than the height of all 3 people) So no one is completely submerged under water

First, we need to calculate the base area of the pool: 30 * 50 = x (find it your self!) Then, we divide the volume of water to the base area: 2000 : x = the height of the water. Finally, you only need to compare the height of the water in the pool to the height of each hero.

Height and width are 40 and 50. The volume of water is 2000 meter cube.

Hence, Volume = length width height So, height = 1.33 meters

height of all of them is greater than 1.33. So no one is under water.

Length times breadth times height = Volume of the floor. As she fills in 2000metercube of water, then 50 times 30 times height=2000. Therefore the one with a height lower than the height occupied by the water, drowns. The height got is 2000/1500 =1.33. None of them have a height less than 1.33. So no one drowns :)

Jan 10, 2014

So, we do not know how tall the pool is. Let's just count the area of the pool, 50*30=1500. Bellatrix added 2000 m^3 of water to the pool. Now, we can count the height of the water by dividing 2000 with 1500. The height of the water is 4/3 or 1,33 m. Since none of the heroes are below 1,33 m tall, nobody is completely underwater.

The floor's area is 50 × 30 50\times 30 or 1500 square meters. The height of the water would then be 2000 1500 \frac{2000}{1500} meters high, or 4 3 \frac{4}{3} meters high. All of the heroes are taller than 1.333... meters.

Given the dimensions of the pool, we can find its plane area. Bella adds 2000 cu.m. to the pool, this is the volume. Volume= area x height 2000 = (50 x 30) x h h = 2000/1500 => h = 4/3 = 1.33

Dimensions of a cuboidal ( assumed from one face rectangular ) pool are 50 X 30 X height.

We have to find the height at which water is filled, so that we can deduce number of heroes inside the pool.

Also the volume of water in the pool is given which makes the problem simpler.

Volume of water = 2000 m^{3}

Now, Volume of cuboid = length X breadth X height

height = \frac{volume of cuboid}{length X breadth}

height = \frac{2000 m^{3}}{50 m X 30 m}

height = \frac{2000 m^{3}}{1500 m^{2}}

height = 1.33 m

As we have found the height we can see from the given heights of heroes that all heroes have more height than the height of filled water in pool. According to question, no hero is completely underwater.

Hence the answer is \boxed{0}

posting the solution again......

Dimensions of a cuboidal ( assumed from one face rectangular ) pool are 50 X 30 X height.

We have to find the height at which water is filled, so that we can deduce number of heroes inside the pool.

Also the volume of water in the pool is given which makes the problem simpler.

Volume of water = 2000 m 3 m^{3}

Now, Volume of cuboid = length X breadth X height

height = v o l u m e o f c u b o i d l e n g t h X b r e a d t h \frac{volume of cuboid}{length X breadth}

height = 2000 m 3 50 m X 30 m \frac{2000 m^{3}}{50 m X 30 m}

height = 2000 m 3 1500 m 2 \frac{2000 m^{3}}{1500 m^{2}}

height = 1.33 m

As we have found the height we can see from the given heights of heroes that all heroes have more height than the height of filled water in pool. According to question, no hero is completely underwater.

Hence the answer is 0 \boxed{0}

Suyog Gadhave - 7 years, 5 months ago

First of all, the pool was empty. It had a length of 50 m and breadth of 30 m.
Then Bellatrix added certain volume of water which was equal to 2000 cubic m.
So far, we know the length(l) and breadth(b) of the pool. To find the height(h) of the pool:
We know that volume(v) = lbh
Therefore 2000 = (50)(30)(h)
2000 = 1500(h)
2000/1500 = h
4/3 = h
1.33 = h
Therefore the height of the pool is 1.33 m, which is shorter than the heroes' heights.
Therefore, none of them will be completely underwater. So the answer is 0.
