Count the number of holes in number. Like in 8809, 8 have 2 holes and 0 have 1 and 9 have 1 hole. So 2581 have 2 holes now a=2 and a/2=1

i solved it differently, didn't notice the count of holes, but deduced from the list. the assumptions i made was that addition is being employed to some mapping of constituent digits and relation doesn't map to negative numbers.

2222=0 : so i concluded that value of 2 is zero.

7111=0 : so i assumed that no negative values will be there and thus, value of bot 7 and 1 has to be zero.

9999=4 : so value of one 9 is 1.

9881=5 : so value of 8 is 2.

5531=0 : so value of 5 is 0 as well.

Looking at other solution is realized that it was just the count of holes and no long deductions were necessary.
