Note that the 4th 1 and the 5th 1 is not connected with a plus. In fact, the sum is actually 1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 31 1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = \boxed{31} .
