Chemistry Level 2

Why are many conductors usually (Barring a few exceptions) opaque?

A) Electric conductors are bad conductors of light.

B) Electric conductors contain mobile electrons, these electrons repel the electric part of the EM wave.

C) Electric conductors produce their own metallic light which blocks background light.

D) A metal cant be a good conductor for light and electricity at the same time.

E) The mobile electrons effectively "shorts out" the electrostatic part of EM waves (light)and this reflects the energy from the surface.

B) A) D) E) C)

@Ashwin Kumar can u please explain what do u mean by " shorts out "?

the atoms in the solid are bonded together in such a way to allow the outer electrons freedom of movement through the material. Because it is a conductor it effectively absorb ("shorts out") the electrostatic part of electromagnetic waves (light)and this reflects the energy from the surface and prevents it from flowing through the body of the metal in a coherent way.
