Try It

If you were to spell out the numbers in full, (One, Two, Three, etc), how far would you have to go until you found the letter 'A'?

The answer is 1000.

from one to 20 no "a" so not on 1 to 99 (think yourself). Also not in hundred so no "a" in 100 to 999 now "a" found in 1000(thousand).

from 0 to 9, there is no letter a in their spelling

now make your base in 10s:

tens

hundreds

thousands

thus you go far until you found >a< in a number and the first number with an a on it is 1000

First think of one to 12 ( because it has a unique spelling) there'reno 'A' then check thirteen(no 'A')then it is obvious that 14-19 has no 'A'. Then it is obvious that 20-99 has no 'A'. Then check 100(no 'A'), then it is obvious that 100-999 have no 'A'. Then check 1000. There you found an 'A'
