Two dimensional motion problem.

An aeroplane is flying 490 m 490 \text{ m} above the ground at a speed of 150 m/s 150 \text{ m/s} and carrying food packages. Some soldiers are standing on the ground. How far from the soldiers must the packages be dropped such that they reach to the soldiers. (Take g = 9.8 m/s 2 g = 9.8 \text{ m/s}^2 )

The answer is 1500.

Since there is no initial vertical velocity we can write: 490 = 1 2 g t 2 t = 10 sec 490=\dfrac 12 gt^2\\ t=10\text{ sec}

And since the horizontal velocity is constant, the horizontal distance covered by the package would be:

d = 150 m/s × t = 1500 m d=150\text{ m/s}\times t=1500\text{ m}
