The trains are coming toward each other at a speed of 180 180 km/h. Half an hour before they meet, they will be 180 2 = 90 \frac{180}{2}=\boxed{90} km apart.

The initial separation of 240 240 km is immaterial, except that it's far enough that the trains start more than 30 30 minutes apart.

Exactly.
In the last 30 minutes, the faster train will travel 50 km and the slower train will travel 40 km.
