I didn't exactly get what the question is. The above figure is not at all a square or rectangle. What do you mean by plane??? What is its shape?

Its just about the arranging the U shaped clip or tile without gaps or overlap...here it plane is a horizontal surface where the u shaped tile can arrange horizontally...that might not matter the area...
