I called "40" as the "starting number" in this question.

The question asks us to "divide 40 by half" and "add ten".

Therefore, we get the answer is 40 / ( 1 / 2 ) + 10 = 90 40/(1/2)+10=\boxed{90}

I did the math on paper when my first answer was incorrect. And arrived at the answer 90, I think intuitively when I multiplied the 40 by 2, then added the +10.

Linguistic question by a non native speaker: I realize that this is done in order to throw the reader, but is "half" on it's own instead of "one half" really enough? Wouldn't that technically turn the equation into 40 / (40/2) + 10 as in "half (of the previous value)" Just wondering... Great catch, though!
