Voltage Calculation

An R L RL load is to the right of the green dots. If the load dissipates 100 100 watts of active power, what is the R M S RMS source voltage magnitude?

The answer is 28.868.

Determine the current magnitude.

P = I 2 R L 100 = I 2 3 I = 10 3 P =|I|^2 \, R_L \\ 100 = |I|^2 \, 3 \\ |I| = \frac{10}{\sqrt{3}}

Determine the total circuit impedance:

Z = Z S + Z R = 4 + j 3 Z = 5 Z = Z_S + Z_R = 4 + j3 \\ |Z| = 5

Calculate the source voltage magnitude:

V = I Z = 50 3 |V| = |I| |Z| = \frac{50}{\sqrt{3}}
