Walk and Ride
Andy, Brianne,and Clark want to attend a rock concert 96 km away. Their only means of travel were by foot and by a two seat motor scooter. They can walk at 5 km/hr and drive at 25 km/hr.
At the start Andy and Brianne rode the scooter and Clark walked. After riding a certain distance Brianne got off the scooter and walked the rest of the way. Andy turned around and drove back to pick Clark up. Then the two of them drove to the concert.
If all three of them arrived at their destination at the same time how long was the trip ( in hours)?

Let x = time Brianne rode, and y = time Brianne walked then
(1) 25x + 5y = 96
d (Clark walked) + d(Clark rode) = 96
(2) 5x + 5((25x - 5x)/30) + 25((y - ((25x - 5x)/30)) = 96
(2) 5x + 5(2x/3) + 25(y - (2x/3)) = 96
Solving, we get x = 2.88, and y = 4.8 therefore time for the trip = 7.68 hrs.
