Walking Back And Forth

Calculus Level 1

Stacy and Katy are walking from A to B. Lacy is walking from to B to A. Stacy walks at 10 km/h. Katy walks at 25km/h. Lacy walks at 12km/h. When Katy starts out from point A, she walks toward Lacy. When Katy reaches Lacy, she turns back immediately and walks toward Stacy. When Katy reaches Stacy, again she turns back and walks toward Lacy. This continues until Stacy and Lacy meet. If the distance between the two points is 132km, what is the total distance that Katy had walked?

The answer is 150.

Katy is just walking back and forth at the same speed. Stacy and Lacy's total speed is22km/h. It takes them 6 hours to finish walking 132km. So Katy is actually just walking for 6 hours at the same speed, which is 25km/h. Therefore, 25x6=150.
