Water Level

Geometry Level 2

A sphere of radius 6cm is dropped into a cylindrical vessel partly filled with water. The radius of the vessel is 8cm. If the sphere is submerged completely, then the surface of the water rises by

The volume of the sphere is 4 3 π r 3 = 4 3 π ( 6 3 ) = 904.78 \dfrac{4}{3}\pi r^3=\dfrac{4}{3} \pi (6^3)=904.78 .

The volume of the rise of water must also be equal to the volume of the sphere. The volume of a cylinder is area of the base multiplied by the height, so we have

904.78 = π ( 8 2 ) ( h ) 904.78 = \pi (8^2)(h)

h = 4.5 c m \color{#D61F06}\boxed{h=4.5~cm}
